Traits of a Great Salesperson

Brandeis often gets asked to consult in hiring of the right salespeople for a company during which we always get asked the same question:

“What makes a great salesperson great?”

Aside from the obvious answer of good training, a field in which Brandeis Training Solutions has a lot of experience; there are three that are significantly less obvious which significantly contribute to the effectiveness of a great salesperson. It is worth noting that all three traits can be significantly built on with a top-level sales training program allowing even greater heights to be reached.

Resilient Ego

A salesperson will hear the word “No” many times in their career in sales. This can become disheartening and even depressing depending on the circumstances of the rejection of their offer to a client. Further to this, continued success in sales can quickly cause a salesperson to become overconfident, lazy or even lose their drive to sell. Being resilient to this constant flux between success and failure can be a major determining factor in their ongoing success in the sales world.

Engaged Mind

A fundamental core component of any good salesperson is their ability to learn new processes, strategies and become adaptable to challenges that arise. When the mind is engaged and eager a salesperson will want to grow, expand their knowledge base and produce great results. Their drive is not you barking orders at them but instead their own Ego and Mind pushing them forward to succeed and become the best salesperson they can be.


Perhaps the most difficult of the three traits to identify in a great salesperson. Empathy governs how they engage with potential client on higher level of consciousness state. Salespeople with good empathetic understanding will be able to engage the client in a more real and emotive way allow for their natural personability to do much of the subtle conversion needed to guide a client to complete the transaction. Additionally, this empathy will also lead to stronger and more loyal long-term customer relationship building.
